Why We Chose This Murder Mystery

For our friend Elizabeth’s birthday, we wanted something more memorable than a traditional dinner or casual get-together. We chose Totally Rad 80’s Prom Gone Bad because we loved the over-the-top 80s prom theme and knew it would give everyone an excuse to fully commit to the fun.

The combination of mystery-solving, retro music, outrageous costumes, and interactive gameplay felt like the perfect fit for our group.

We also loved that Night of Mystery’s downloadable format made planning easy. We could instantly access all the materials, print what we needed, and customize the setup to match our vision for the party. That flexibility helped us focus more on creating a fun experience and less on stressing over logistics.

How the Night Unfolded

From the moment guests arrived, we wanted them to feel like they had stepped into an actual 1980s prom at Mayhem High.

We created a custom photo backdrop complete with:

  • Jumbo Rubik’s Cube props
  • Mixtape decorations
  • Pac-Man details
  • A Mayhem High poster

The entryway and hallway were decorated with metallic streamers, fringe doorway curtains, and additional themed signage to immediately set the tone.

Inside the party space, we used:

  • Neon tableware
  • Homemade cassette tape vases
  • Bright flower bouquets
  • Night of Mystery printable extras mixed into the centerpieces

One of our favorite personal touches was displaying old prom photos from years ago. Guests spent time laughing, reminiscing, and comparing pictures before the mystery even started.

For food, we kept things simple and crowd-friendly with a taco bar, cake, and cupcakes topped with neon sprinkles.

Once everyone opened their character envelopes, the party instantly came alive.

We provided notebooks and pens for guests to track clues and accusations, which ended up helping people stay involved throughout the game. Then we blasted our favorite 80s playlist and spent the night dancing, laughing, interrogating suspects, and fully embracing the drama.

Things got so competitive — and energetic — that the birthday girl actually ended the evening with a broken toe thanks to the Prom King’s enthusiastic electric sliding.

Honestly, it just became part of the legend of the night.

Only one guest successfully guessed the murderer, which made the mystery feel challenging without becoming frustrating.

At the end of the evening, we handed out:

  • Gift cards
  • Printable awards for Super Sleuth
  • Best Dressed awards
  • Drama King awards

To finish the night, every family went home with boombox-themed treat boxes filled with jelly bracelets, 80s candy, and other totally radical goodies.

What Made This Party Work So Well

Several things helped make this party especially successful:

  • The theme was instantly recognizable. Everyone understood the vibe immediately, which made it easy for guests to participate.
  • The downloadable format simplified hosting. We could print materials as needed and prepare everything on our own timeline.
  • The mystery encouraged constant interaction. Guests naturally mingled, questioned each other, and stayed engaged all night.
  • The decor created immersion without requiring a huge budget. Many of our decorations were homemade or inexpensive DIY pieces.
  • Music kept the energy high. The 80s playlist helped guests stay in character and created a fun atmosphere between rounds.
  • The awards added extra motivation. Guests became even more invested once they realized there were prizes involved.

This party worked because everyone felt included — even guests who were initially nervous about roleplaying quickly got swept into the fun.

Don’t overcomplicate the setup. Focus on a few big themed details, great music, and creating opportunities for guests to interact. That’s what people remember most.”

Who This Mystery Is Perfect For

Totally Rad 80’s Prom Gone Bad is especially great for:

  • Birthday parties
  • Girls’ nights
  • 80s-themed events
  • Large friend groups
  • Guests who love nostalgic themes
  • Groups that enjoy dressing up and interacting
  • Hosts looking for a highly energetic party atmosphere

This mystery works particularly well because the 1980s setting gives guests an easy entry point. Even people unfamiliar with murder mystery parties can quickly understand the tone and jump into character.

Hosting Tips We’d Share

If we hosted this party again, here are the biggest tips we’d pass along:

  • Create one or two standout photo areas for guests
  • Use music continuously throughout the evening
  • Give guests notebooks for tracking clues
  • Include prizes or awards to encourage participation
  • Lean into nostalgia with props and decorations
  • Don’t worry about perfection — enthusiasm matters more

We’d also recommend giving guests enough time before the party to plan costumes. The outfits became one of the most entertaining parts of the entire evening.

Final Verdict: Would We Do It Again?

Absolutely.

This party delivered everything we hoped for: nonstop laughter, guest interaction, memorable moments, and a completely unique birthday experience.

What made Night of Mystery stand out was how easy the structure was to follow while still allowing us to personalize the experience for our group. The combination of flexibility and guided gameplay helped the evening run smoothly from start to finish.

We’re already planning our next mystery night — and the birthday girl’s new margarita maker may mean Murder in Margaritaland is next on the list.

A huge thank you from Lori Dillard and our totally rad prom crew for helping us create a night we’ll never forget.
