Party of the Month Snapshot
Party Host: Brittany & Noel
Mystery Played: Murder in Margaritaland by Night of Mystery
Party Type: Annual themed party (4th year hosting)
Host Experience Level: Experienced hosts
Guest Count & Age Range: ~40 guests, adults (mixed ages)
Best Moment of the Night: Guests fully stepping into their roles—improvising, interacting, and confidently solving the mystery together.
Why This Party Was a Hit: The large-scale setup created an immersive environment, while the flexible game format allowed both first-time and returning guests to participate comfortably.
Why We Chose This Murder Mystery
This was our fourth annual murder mystery party, and we’ve used Night of Mystery games every year—so we knew exactly what to expect: a well-organized, engaging experience that guests genuinely enjoy.
We chose Murder in Margaritaland because it offered a fun, tropical theme that’s easy to build around. It allowed us to go all-in on creating a resort-style atmosphere while still keeping the focus on the mystery itself.
Another reason this theme worked so well is how adaptable the downloadable format is. We were able to plan everything months in advance, customize details, and scale the party up to fit a much larger group than usual.
How the Night Unfolded
Planning for the event started a couple of months ahead, giving us time to fully transform our space.
Here’s how the night came together:
- Our home was turned into a tropical resort, complete with a thatched roof tiki bar in the kitchen
- A heated outdoor tent expanded the party space and allowed for a larger guest list
- Guests could enjoy catered food from local restaurants or grab drinks from a palm tree cooler
- A frozen margarita machine served the signature cocktail: “When in Margaritaland”
As the party began, guests stepped into their roles—some sticking closely to their character materials, while others improvised and expanded their personalities.
The structure of the game helped guide the evening, but the energy came from the guests themselves. Conversations, clue-sharing, and character interactions naturally filled the space.
By the end of the night, multiple guests had pieced together the mystery and successfully solved the crime.
What Made This Party Work So Well
Several key elements made this party both seamless and memorable:
• Flexible character structure — Guests could follow their roles closely or improvise, making it comfortable for both introverts and outgoing personalities
• Scalability for large groups — With around 40 guests, the ability to easily add and customize characters ensured everyone was included
• Immersive environment — The tiki bar, tent, and tropical decor made the setting feel like a real destination
• Downloadable and editable materials — This allowed for easy planning, organization, and customization ahead of time
• Mix of new and returning guests — The game structure made it easy for first-timers to jump in while still feeling fresh for repeat players
• Clear, organized resources — Guests consistently commented on how easy everything was to follow
Why this worked: The combination of strong structure and flexibility meant guests could engage at their own comfort level, which kept everyone involved and having fun.
Who This Mystery Is Perfect For
Murder in Margaritaland is especially well-suited for:
- Large group events (30+ guests)
- Annual party traditions or repeat hosts
- Mixed groups of experienced and first-time players
- Hosts who want to create an immersive environment
- Summer parties or tropical-themed gatherings
- Groups that enjoy both structure and creative freedom
Because the game allows for flexibility in how guests participate, it works equally well for confident performers and those who prefer a more relaxed approach.
