Party of the Month Snapshot

Party Host: Tara Sekora
Mystery Played: Murder in Margaritaland by Night of Mystery
Party Type: Birthday celebration with a tropical mystery theme
Host Experience Level: First-time host
Guest Count & Age Range: Approx. 10–15 adults (mixed ages)
Best Moment of the Night: The dramatic moment when the lights went out and the “murder” occurred—followed by guests scrambling to solve the mystery.
Why This Party Was a Hit: The tropical theme made decorating and costumes easy, the game kept guests interacting all night, and the relaxed food stations allowed everyone to mingle while sleuthing.

Why We Chose This Murder Mystery

I hosted this party as a birthday celebration for my mom, and I wanted something fun, interactive, and memorable. The tropical beach vibe of Murder in Margaritaland immediately stood out.

It felt perfect for a relaxed celebration where guests could dress up in tropical attire, enjoy margaritas, and step into a playful mystery storyline.

Another reason this theme worked so well was how easy the setup was. Because the game is downloadable, I was able to organize everything ahead of time, print the materials, and send characters to guests weeks before the party.

Everyone received their character four weeks in advance, which gave them plenty of time to get into the spirit of the event.

How the Night Unfolded

Guests were welcomed into the party by my husband, who played the role of Coconut Joe, the owner of Margaritaville.

Here’s how the evening flowed:

  • Guests were greeted at the door by Coconut Joe.

  • Each person grabbed their envelope and put on only their name tag.

  • Everyone headed to the kitchen to build a nacho plate and margarita before the game began.

  • Once everyone arrived, Coconut Joe gave a welcome speech.

  • Guests opened their envelopes and the mystery officially began.

From that moment on, the party practically ran itself. Guests started interacting with each other, sharing clues, and fully embracing their characters.

The evening moved smoothly through the game stages, and when the planned “murder moment” arrived—lights out and sound effects included—everyone was fully immersed in the mystery.

What Made This Party Work So Well

Several things came together to make the night a success:

Sending characters early — Giving guests their roles four weeks ahead helped them plan costumes and get excited.
Interactive food stations — A nacho bar and margarita station allowed guests to grab food throughout the night without interrupting gameplay.
The downloadable game format — Having everything printable and organized ahead of time made hosting simple and stress-free.
Easy tropical theme — Most people already had something beachy to wear, which made costumes effortless.
Photo backdrop and props — This became the biggest hit of the night and created memorable photos.
Music during awards — Playing themed music while announcing awards added energy and got guests singing along.

Why this worked: Guests were free to mingle, eat, and stay in character at the same time, which kept the party lively and engaging.

Who This Mystery Is Perfect For

Murder in Margaritaland is a great choice for:

  • Birthday celebrations

  • Summer parties or backyard gatherings

  • Beach lovers or Margaritaville fans

  • Groups who enjoy costumes but want something easy

  • First-time murder mystery hosts

  • Social groups who enjoy mingling and conversation

Because the theme is so recognizable and relaxed, guests quickly feel comfortable stepping into the story.

Hosting Tips We’d Share

Hosting a mystery party is easier when you prepare a few things ahead of time.

Tip #1: Stay organized.
I used a checklist and larger envelopes to sort the smaller game envelopes.

Example:

  • Large envelope labeled “A” envelopes

  • Large envelope labeled “B” envelopes

This made everything much easier to manage during the party.

Tip #2: Have a clear plan for the game flow.
Before the party, my husband and I reviewed the instructions and decided on cues for the big moments.

For example:

  • Turning off the lights

  • Playing a “gunshot” sound

  • Knowing exactly when to distribute the next envelope

Tip #3: Recruit a co-host.
Having someone help guide the party makes a huge difference.

“I highly recommend having a co-host—it makes the party easier to manage and lets you enjoy the night too.”

My husband played Coconut Joe, which made him part of the story while also helping keep the game moving.

Party Highlights (Photos)

Highlights from Tara’s Margaritaland party included:

  • Tropical door decorations using Night of Mystery printable signs

  • A colorful photo backdrop with props from Amazon and Hobby Lobby

  • A self-serve nacho bar that guests could snack from throughout the night

  • Mini key lime pies with shark fins for dessert

  • A margarita station with multiple flavor options

The photo backdrop ended up being the crowd favorite and gave guests a fun place to capture memories from the night.

Final Verdict: Would We Do It Again?

Absolutely. The party was interactive, easy to host, and unforgettable for everyone involved.

It worked especially well because guests were constantly involved—talking, laughing, sharing clues, and stepping into their characters.

Best of all, the planning process was surprisingly manageable thanks to the organized structure and printable materials provided by Night of Mystery.

Tara summed it up best:

“Everyone had a blast and it’s a party we’ll never forget.”
