A Knight of Murder
A Night of Medieval Madness!

Hear ye! Hear ye!
All ye Kings and Queens,
Knights and Nobles,
Serfs and Servants!

A tournament of great celebration is planned to honor the noble marriage of Baron Bartholomew to Lady Diana of Dunnsberry in the manor of Fernwood. As a resident of the manor, you are not only invited to be there, but your attendance is required by the request of your lord.

Whether it is to see knights jousting or to partake in the ale and entertainment, your business is your own... that is until you find yourself in the middle of a murder.

With only one night to find the guilty, you will soon figure out that there is a lot more at stake, for murder in the manor is punishable by death. Whether you are guilty or not, there will be others trying to finger you as the culprit as you try to find the real murderer, and only you can defend your innocence. Who do you trust? Who will betray you before the night is through? Everyone is a suspect and no one is safe in this mystery of medieval madness.

Be careful in attending. Your life will depend not only on your innocence, but your ability to defend it.

Guest Totals:
For 20-80
guests: at least 7 or 8 male roles, 7or 8 female roles.
For 15-21 guests: 7/8-10 male roles, 7/8-11 female roles.
For 10-15 guests: 4/5-8 males, 4/5-8 female roles.

King Kyle: The ruler of this prosperous kingdom. He is well liked by everyone. It’s hard to have many enemies when the punishment of betrayal is death!

Queen Genevieve:
Wife of King Kyle. She rules equally alongside her king.

Sheriff:
The king’s official in Fernwood. He is in charge of collecting the taxes in the manor, which have been dwindling even though prosperity seems to be at its highest.

Sherilyn:
Wife to the sheriff. Sherilyn will do anything to see her husband promoted. Especially if that means more riches and more power for her.

Lord Taylor:
He runs the manor happily with Lady Gwendolyn. He is throwing the tournament in celebration of his only son’s marriage to the noble woman of his choosing.

Lady Gwendolyn:
Runs the manor lands with her husband Lord Taylor. She is delighted for the tournament, it means prosperity and happiness & the marriage of her only son to another noble.

Baron Bartholomew:
The son of Lord Taylor and Lady Gwendolyn. The tournament is planned in honor of his marriage to another noble on the one year anniversary of their meeting. His only regret is that he must marry for wealth and not for love.

Lady Diana of Dunnsberry: Noble woman of Dunnsberry, she arrived in Fernwood in search of a husband that she found, but at the cost of breaking up one true love.

Maid Marilyn:
Lady Gwendolyn’s lady-in-waiting. Maid Marilyn is like a daughter to the lady and knows her lady will do anything for her happiness.

Sir Rufus: Sir Rufus is relatively new knight to the manor and does not have as favorable of a reputation that of Sir Cameron. He is hoping to increase his popularity with a victory over Sir Cameron in the tournament.

Sir Cameron: A gallant knight that will be entertaining and fighting for his honor in the manor tournament. Word is that if he wins, he will be asking for the favor of Maid Marilyn.

Gallant Gary: Squire to Sir Cameron. He will do anything for his knight, Sir Cameron. Gary must prove valor, loyalty and honor in order to be knighted himself.

Charlamagne:
As chambermaid, she is the lowest of the servants to live in the castle. Charlamagne knows the castle in and out and has seen a lot. Her access to all the places may also be what gets her into trouble.

Poor Pearl:
A peasant woman whose small earnings have grown even smaller since the sheriff has been enforcing the laws in the manor.

Joking Jerry:
As the court jester, it’s his job to make everyone laugh. But at what cost does a laugh turn deadly?

Maid Medusa:
She has her sights set much higher than her class would suggest. Maid Medusa hopes to be married to Sir Rufus before the year is out.

William the Watchman:
As the manor watchman, he is the security for the lord and his manor lands. He is sure to be the enforcer if anyone gets out of hand at the tournament.

Maid Monica:
She is the one who always caught the baron’s eye (and heart). Since the baron’s engagement has been set with another woman, some say Monica has turned rather ruthless.

Elizabeth the Elaborate:
A vassal to the lord, she has some favor with the nobles. But is it enough to make Lord Taylor change his decisions concerning her daughter, or will Elizabeth have to take measures into her own hands?

Maid Victoria:
Another victim of a pre-arranged marriage to a man she does not love. Is her destiny sealed or can she change it in just one night?

Wyatt Worker:
As a serf, Wyatt is the lowest in the class system. That should be reason enough to commit murder.

"...I wanted to do something interesting to mark my 30th, and decided A Knight of Murder looked like a good idea. What I didnt realise is how MUCH fun it would be as 40 guests got swept up in Lets Pretend level 7. You can imagine the mayhem at work when my colleagues started trying on costumes in the offi..."

".... We have been planning this for two months and finally played it on January 12, 2007. Everyone rented costumes or made their own. Charlamagne had to be the best home-made costume. We started with dinner: turducken served with parsleyed potatoes. The table was set with numerous kinds of fruit and cheeses. Since it ..."

"...Hello there, your party certainly looks like it was fun!! I am planning on a Knight of Murder in the next few months. I had a great time hosting Murder at the Juice Joint in the past. I have a couple of questions for you. Overall, how expensive was it for you to host a show of 56 patrons? I have roughly 30 in mind..."

"...Wow, A Knight of Murder was a blast! This was my second murder mystery thrown. It was for no special occasion, other than a great time with friends. I thoroughly enjoy these events, and my effort this time around was to top Murder at the Juice Joint, which was certainly hard to beat. I had approximately 30 guests..."

COSTUMING SUGGESTIONS:

• Try this link for Medieval Hairstyles

• Dress up an old dress by addding shimmering fabric, gold cord or even fake fur.

• Feeling regal? Get a piece of velvet material from the fabric store for a cape add some fake fur. Or spray paint a curtain rod gold for a staff.

• Change the color of a dress or outfit by spray painting it.

• Women, don't forget a headband!

• Make your own cress or coat of arms and add it to your outfit. (see some designs below) A cress can be easily made out of felt and attached with safety pins or velcro.

• Construct one long table for dinner-- Use a brightly colored piece of fabric for a runner.

• Make the peasantry and the Jester entertain the nobility-- It was common for the king and/or the nobles to demand their lower class comrades to "make them laugh" before they could continue on with their evening.

• Have the guests eat entirely with their hands. (Silverware? What is silverware?)

• Decorate by hanging plastic shields and swords on the walls (find some at a local party store).

• Drape brightly colored fabric on the walls like banners. (Purple and gold metallic for royalty!)

• Provide juggling and dancing as forms of entertainment between courses of the meal.

• Have a trumpet sound effect announce guests as they arrive.

• Make your own shields (see patterns above)

• Print all of the materials for the game on parchments to make them more "authentic".

• When the characters read the introduction, investigation report, evidence presentation & solution, have them presented on a scroll.

• Have an unfinished basement set up as the dungeon.

• Have candles flickering about.

• Hold the party in an old pub.

• Dig a moat around the venue (just kidding!)

• Create a backdrop and have your guests pose in front of it for pictures.

Serve a Medieval Feast--
Begin dinner with soup or broth, bread, & cheese. Follow with green vegetables, a meat dish of lean pork or chicken, or perhaps fish, accompanied with sauces, then move on to the heavier and fancier items, in smaller portions. End with sweets and spiced desserts. Serve wine and ale throughout the entire meal, or if the event is non-alcoholic, use apple cider, grape juice, lemonade, water, etc. Just don't let your guests go thirsty! Divide the various dishes among two or three courses, serving each course in its entirety and leaving time for talk, music, & entertainment for guests between courses.

Serve turkey legs or chicken on the bone--
Perfect for having your guests eat with their hands (as they did in the olden days).

Medieval
Feasts-- Try some of these Medieval Recipes.

Misc. Fact: Origin of the Wedding Cake-
"In medieval England, guests brought small cakes and piled them on the center of a table. The bride and groom then attempted to kiss over them. A baker from France conceived the idea of icing all the small cakes together in one large cake." (Aug/Sept issue of Modern Bride)

Musical selections from this time period are hard to suggest since there is little documented. Here are a few suggestions, though:

Instrumentals:
There were many simple instruments that were used to entertain. Try finding some music from the harp, flute, pan flute, mandolin, organ or lute. Find it here.

Theatrical Soundtracks:
Since little is known, try using soundtracks from movies from the time period. Braveheart, Camelot, or for some humor Monty Python's Search For The Holy Grail.

For Free Music--
Visit your local library for a number of compilations from the time

Provide an assortment of accessories to help your guests "get into character" include items such as: swords, shields, headbands, scarves, etc.
