First-time host/hostesses need not be wary. Night of Mystery parties have everything you need to throw a successful party and are designed to be easy-to-run.

If you want to play along, you can! As host, you will want to read the host’s guide in full to ensure that you are setting the game up correctly WITHOUT letting you know who the murderer is!

Then sit back, relax, and enjoy the MURDER!

YES! As host, you get to decide how much or little you know about the murder.

Yes. We have invitations you can download at any time to send out to your guests. (We recommend you do this before purchasing if you are unclear of your guest count.)

Once you order, you will have access to your party pdf as well as email invitations with character descriptions included for your guests. See a sample emailable invite with character description here.

Yes- but you MUST purchase the business license.

If you wish to run our parties with your business or organized group (including non-profit charities), for any manner, you will need to purchase the business license. This includes, but is not limited to running the parties for company parties, team building activities, events where you are charging any individuals to take part or be a spectator while the game(s) are being played, events where you are not charging individuals to take part or be a spectator while the game(s) are being played,  included it in a package for which you have charged the individual, included as a “free” event for your group, etc. you MUST pay the business fee.

The business fee enables you to run the game multiple times for-profit within one year’s time.

For example, if you are running a mystery dinner, you may have multiple seating of that dinner within that year’s time. Additionally, if you are using it as a company team building activity, you can run it with multiple teams within your company.

We have found our fee to be less costly than our competitors and much less expensive than having your own party written for you or hiring a company to run it for you.

Upon checkout, you will be prompted to enter the name of the business for which the party will be associated with.

Please keep in mind that without paying this business fee, you are in violation of the law and subject to prosecution, of which the minimum fees start at $5,000 and go up. (See complete Terms and Conditions).

WE DO monitor the web and often become aware of cases of infringement and prosecute when such instances arise. For more information, please see our terms and conditions.

In order to run these games as a fundraiser  you will now need to purchase the business license. (Please see question above.)

While we used to waive the business fee for such organizations, we found our policy was getting taken advantage of.

If you have any questions, please contact us or see our terms and conditions page.

The money in the game will be allow your guests  to participate in blackmail, bribery, extortion and/or other devious and/or creative purposes throughout the game.

The money will be explained to everyone in the “introduction” at the beginning of the night.

This adds another layer to the game to allow your guests to interact with one another in ways you will never see coming!

There will also be an award for the person who ends up with the most money.

This will depend on (a) the version of party you order and (b) what you/they want to do at the party.

Some murder mystery party game rules say (generally the smaller 6-8 guest and 8-12 guest versions) have the victim rise and become the investigator after their “death.”

Since the victim does not know who murdered them, they can still play along and try to guess the murderer using their previous background knowledge and their money in order to bribe and blackmail others and derive their secrets from one another.

If you have a larger version, and you have not assigned the investigator (they are generally listed as the first person to eliminate for this reason), then the victim will need to become the investigator.

If you have assigned the investigator, but have an extra role that is not already filled, the victim can become this person (if you order the 20-80 player version, this will always be an option).

If the victim wishes to do nothing, they can do that as well. Some guests really enjoy playing along “dead” and trying to figure out who killed them.

*** These are for the murder mystery part game for adults versions, but there are slight variations for the kid mysteries. Please see our Kid Mysteries FAQ section for more details!

No. Life doesn’t go by a script and neither should you. We find that pre-scripting a party takes away from the spontaneity of the event and limits your guests in what they can do and think.

With Night Of Mystery parties, you will find that each of your guests will receive more than enough information about their character, how to play, secrets and objectives for them to do with as they please throughout the party. This gives the character enough to do without being told WHAT to do. This format also allows for much improvisation throughout the night and a party as unique as the individuals attending it.

You can view some of the sample objectives in any of our intro files. Here is one.

***The kid mysteries DO include short, scripted parts.

NO, you will not receive anything in the mail.

All of our murder mystery games come as downloadable files. This allows for immediate delivery to the customer upon order.

Once purchased, you will log back into your account that you created in the purchasing process. If you have not created one, you can create an account in the members center using the email address that you used when purchasing the party.

Once logged into your account, you will find your mystery download and your character invites in your “account details”. You will have 60 days to download your mystery files. We find that this process allows us to keep our costs low since we do not have to charge for printing, shipping, etc. Additionally, this process allows for the customer to have immediate access to their parties.

Again, you will not receive your mystery in the mail.

Due to a heavy demand for games that were suitable for more conservative groups and youths, some of the parties have been formatted without any reference to alcohol, extramarital affairs and/or illegal drugs.

Please note: there are a number of our parties that DO NOT have clean versions.

We recommend clean versions for gatherings with more conservative guests and company functions so as not to offend anyone.

Although these mysteries do not have references to some topics; blackmail, bribery, murder and deceit are still part of the game. Please email us with any specific questions about content before ordering if you are concerned.

These mysteries are named “Clean Versions” and are found here.

When purchasing, you will need to select the clean and/or teen option.

Murder Mystery Party Game

You will want to view your file in Adobe Acrobat Reader.

DO NOT view in Mac Preview or other Preview Applications, as those applications sometimes drop or alter images that can be important to the mystery and/or the file’s appearance.

To get the free program,  go to http://www.adobe.com and click on “Get Adobe Reader” (button on the left-hand side of the screen). The site will take you through the steps to download this free application. Once you have the application downloaded, you will be able to view and print your file through Adobe Reader.

Guest Quantities

Unfortunately, you cannot.

Since our games are custom written for the size of the party (ie, we don’t just create a mystery with 8 characters and then keep adding more characters to it), each mystery size is unique unto itself and must be charged that way. That being said, going from 10-15 version to 15-20 version, will not only add in more characters, but it will change the storylines of the existing characters, and vice-versa in going from a larger version to a smaller one.

This is why we strongly suggest you get a guest count before formally ordering. You can do so by downloading an invitation, inviting your guests and then purchasing your mystery once you have a more acurate number of people attending.

Unfortunately, if you find yourself in this predicament, you will have to purchase another version of the mystery for the size you want unless you are moving from the 15-20 version to the 20+ version.

If you would like to see how to add guests without upgrading, please see this blog post.

That information is on the 2nd/ “Assigning Characters” page in your host’s guide.

It will say, “If you are short of the XXX  guests, the game can be played without the following characters: …”

You will want to read the host’s guide in full to give you directions on how to set up the party properly. Reading the host’s guide WILL NOT tell you who the murderer is, so that you (as host) can play along.

THEIR WILL NOT be instructions on how to eliminate guests beyond the minimum number of guests allotted for the party. For instance, if you purchase the 10-15 guest version, you will need a minimum of 10 guests to play, so there will only be 5 characters that you can eliminate without ruining the game. Since our games are custom written for the size of the party (ie, we don’t just create a mystery with 8 characters and then keep adding more characters to it), each mystery size is unique unto itself.

That being said, if you purchase larger than intended party with the intent to cut down to a party with less guests than the game is written for, it will not work.  This is why we strongly suggest you get a guest count before formally ordering. You can do so by downloading an invitation, inviting your guests and then purchasing your mystery once you have a more accurate number of people attending.

Each game comes with instructions and the minimum number of people that need to be in attendance. As long as you have the minimum number, you will be alright. Make sure to read through the host guide that you receive to see which characters should be left out if you are short of the maximum number of guests.

You can find the information about who to eliminate if you do not have the maximum number of guests on the first page of your host’s guide. It will say, “If you are short of the XXX  guests, the game can be played without the following characters: …”

No, you do not. Each murder mystery party game comes with a preset list of characters that are essential to make the mystery work.

The characters shown on the website are for the 15-20 guest version. If you have a desire to know the characters you will receive with a different version, please email us and we are happy to divulge that information. In order to post any spoilers, we do not publish smaller lists on the website.

The larger party includes 20 guests as suspects and then a number of general character descriptions for additional guests.

  • These additional general characters will keep their birth name (our you can assign them a new name) and they will have information about the murder, secrets to keep and objectives to complete.
  • These characters will act as sleuths and help bring to the surface some of the hidden motives of the suspects in question. – You may have duplicates of as many of these general characters are you need in order to fill your guest list.
  •  With larger parties, we find that it is important to have these extra roles to (a) make sure everyone is “involved” with the murder and (b) to help bring to light all of the possible motives for the murder.
  • These versions are also a great way to accommodate guests who are last-minute add-ons or guests who are unsure if they are going to be able to make the party at all.
  • These versions have also been used with as little as 21 guests and in excess of 100 guests.

You can always invite the guest as an investigator:

With the party materials offered in the smaller versions, you can still involve the additional guests without giving them roles. One successful way to do this is to send the additional guests the invite and newletter/newspiece that introduces the other characters/suspects at the party. This way, the guests are still informed and ‘in the know’ of everything that is happening. When these guests arrive at the party, provide them with money (maybe even more than the character guests), and instruct them to use it wisely to gain secrets and information on the suspects at large.

Additionally, inform the investigators they are still competing for “best actor/actress,” “best costume,” “most money” and “super sleuth” awards. This allows the guests to be involved with the mystery without having their own roles. (This idea came to light after a customer had a great time successfully executing it.)

Many parties list the investigator role as the first “optional” character to eliminate. If you eliminate this role, then the victim will assume the investigator “after death.” (Ie, once the victim has “died” they will come back to take over as the role of the investigator).

Since the investigator’s main role is based after the murder, it is ok if they are eliminated from the first half of the party and play only the second half. Additionally, the victim does not know who killed them or why, so they can assume the role of the investigator for the second half.

Generally, after the “death,” and the victim gets up, the host can then explain that there will be an investigator for the second half (which will be the victim, if you have not assigned someone to the investigator). The victim/investigator can then read the “investigation directions” to the crowd. You will have prepared the investigator’s “b envelope,” so the guest will know what to do next and how to proceed.

Virtual Murder Mystery Parties

The mystery aspect of the murder mystery party game is the same, but your guests meet and interact online, instead of in-person for the murder mystery party game.

Some of the benefits for this format:
– Everyone can meet and play from the comfort of their own home.
– You can play with friends across the country – or even the world –without anyone traveling.
– Not spreading any germs
– Set-up for this type of party is generally easier than hosting a party in your own home or venue
– Virtual parties can easily be done last-minute without complication
– No decorations needed (we include virtual backgrounds to upload as a “setting” for your party).

Excellent question!!! And one that deserves an in-depth explanation. Because of this, we have created an intro file for our virtual versions to better explain the process of using a virtual murder mystery party game kit.

Please click here for a sample virtual intro file.

To get the most out of Night of Mystery virtual murder mystery parties, you will want to pick an app that has the following features:
–   Video conferencing
–   Private messaging/chat function
–   Ability to attach documents in a private message
–   Screen sharing
–    Breakout rooms
–   Set virtual backgrounds
Because having these features will greatly enhance your virtual party experience (and some features are integral to it), the video chat room we recommend using is Zoom.

We recommend that you utilize the private chat and breakout rooms functions on Zoom to get the best experience from your virtual party. These functions make it easy to have private conversations between guests without everyone at the party being privy to the information.
**Night of Mystery includes instructions in their host’s guide on how to do so.

Murder Mystery Game Versions

Due to a heavy demand for games that were suitable for more conservative groups and youths, some of the parties have been formatted without any reference to alcohol, extramarital affairs and/or illegal drugs.  These mysteries are named “Clean Versions” and are found here.

Please note: there are a number of our parties that DO NOT have clean versions.

Clean versions are recommended for gatherings with more conservative guests, teens and/or company functions so as not to lessen the chances of offending anyone (there is always someone…).

Even in the clean versions, blackmail, bribery, murder and deceit are still part of the game.

For questions on what references are included in specific mysteries without clean versions, please email support@nightofmystery.com

An LGBTQ friendly version is a mystery where there are same-sex couples within it. These versions are typically formatted for mostly-male or mostly-female with some gender-neutral characters. The male or female characters may be involved in same-sex relationships.

***These are NOT non-binary versions. Please pay attention to the gender count, if that is a concern.

A teen version is a clean version that is simplified in verbiage to cater to a younger crowd.

Night of Mystery has launched a line of kid mysteries which are formatted for children ages 8-12. These mysteries involve much simpler themes and concepts, but include the same amount of murder mystery fun! To find out more information on these mysteries, please see the FAQ section on kid mysteries.

A game where the kids will play work together to solve challenges, puzzles, etc. to “escape” by unlocking something in a set amount of time.

Currently, we have one escape game on the site – The Great Egg Escape

Business Licenses for Murder Mystery Party Game Kit

Night of Mystery offers business licenses so you can ABSOLUTELY run our mysteries with your group, organization, business, company, and/or AS your business!

  • Team building exercises
  • Company parties
  • Functions at retreats
  • Customer appreciation events
  • Charging customers to attend
  • As an event planner, you can use mystery materials to facilitate parties for clients
  • As mixers for a social clubs, organizations, organized group, etc.
  • For fundraisers for organizations, individuals, or groups
  • Including the parties in a stay at your bed and breakfast, hotel, or restaurant

Basically any time other than when you are using the mystery when it is not strictly for personal purposes with friends and/or family

For each of these purposes (and more) you will need to purchase a business license at time of checkout. That’s it! With the business license you can legally with your business, company, organization, group, etc.

  • If you are any business, organized group and/or company you will need a business license to legally run our parties. Simply fill in your company’s name at checkout. This will link your company and theme on our system.

  • Each license covers that mystery theme for a year from time if purchase.

  • You can run that theme as many times as you desire in that calendar year. If you run that same theme the following year, you’ll need to repurchase the license (but not the mystery) for the following year.

  • You will need a new business license for each theme and each year.

  • You need to keep the mystery name and branding that the mystery is. You can’t, for instance, take our “Murder at The Deadwood Saloon” and rename and brand it to your own bar name. Sorry. As much as we hate to turn away customers, if this is your intention, it’s be better to go with another company that specializes in providing that service with their own mysteries.
Additionally, taking “A Deadly Vintage” and renaming it something like, “A Vintage Murder” also violates our copyright and is subject to federal penalties. We’d rather you just pay our license fee and allow us to cross promote each other — let’s work together not against one another!

This is part of the legal standards. You are using copyrighted materials. NOM has spent loads of time and talent developing their mysteries and anyone using and changing them is violating their copyright and copyright law.
Since that is regulated by the Feds, penalties start at $150,000 —yikes😬— so just stick to the $225 fee and we all don’t have to worry about those.

  • Sell the materials. You do not own the materials or the right to sell them. This license only allows you to facilitate the parties.

  • Remove the copyright from any of the materials. It’s illegal, don’t do it.

  • Change the mystery name and/or branding . You can’t, for instance, take our “Murder at The Deadwood Saloon” and rename and brand it to your own bar name. Sorry. As much as we hate to turn away customers, if this is your intention, it’s be better to go with another company that specializes in providing that service with their own mysteries.

  • You CANNOT run these for non-profit organizations or as fundraisers without paying the business license fee. Again, we are super bummed we had to change this policy, but we found too many people abusing this it and had to stop donating the business fee. That being said, if you are doing a legit fundraiser for your non-profit, contact nom with the details. We have a number of business licenses we can donate/year and we often do with non-profit fundraisers.

  • No spoilers posted on social media and/or the internet! This includes, but is not limited to, listing vital clues, posting pictures of the victim, announcing the murderer or victim, etc.

Kid Mysteries

  • Ahead of time, the kids will be sent a highly-graphic, fun invitation (included with the mystery) with some background information on the party which will also include their character information!

  • At the party, the kids will introduce themselves by reading a short script.

  • Someone will “fall down dead.”

  • After “death,” the ‘victim’ will come back to the party as the investigator and name some suspects.

  • The kids will be divided into suspects and investigators.

  • Using short scripts, the kids will question one another in front of the other kids – giving away clues as the party goes on.

  • After two rounds of investigations, which will uncover clues and evidence, the kids will make their best guesses at who the guilty party is.

  • The guilty party will confess!!!
