Why We Chose This Murder Mystery
Murder at Gatsby’s Gala gave us the perfect excuse to go all-out with a glamorous party.
The theme made it easy to build the evening around gold and black accents, elegant décor, drinks, desserts, and the feeling of stepping into another era. We could be creative with the space while still letting the murder mystery provide the structure and entertainment for the night.
One of the best things about the theme was how naturally everything worked together. Guests could dress up, mingle over drinks, enjoy dinner, and get into character without the party feeling overly structured.
The downloadable Night of Mystery format also gave us a foundation to work from while leaving plenty of room to make the event our own.
How the Night Unfolded
We started the evening outside with a buffet so everyone could eat together before the mystery really got underway.
Once everyone had eaten, we moved into the main party experience. Drinks and desserts were ready, there was an area for dancing and mingling, and we even had an official bar with a bartender serving drinks throughout the night.
The Cat’s Meow Speakeasy was my favorite part of the setup. It had a moody, secretive feeling that fit the mystery perfectly and made the space feel like somewhere guests weren’t quite supposed to be.
And then there were the guests.
Everyone came ready to play, bringing plenty of glitz, glam, personality, and their own flair to the party. That willingness to embrace the characters helped turn a beautifully decorated gathering into a truly interactive murder mystery experience.
What Made This Party Work So Well
This party worked because the theme, space, activities, and guests all supported the mystery instead of competing with it.
A few things made an especially big difference:
- Separate party areas created variety. Dinner, drinks, desserts, dancing, and the speakeasy each had their own place, giving guests reasons to move around and interact.
- The décor established the atmosphere immediately. Gold and black accents created an elegant Gatsby-inspired look without needing every detail to be elaborate.
- Guests committed to the experience. Everyone arrived dressed in plenty of glitz and glam and ready to play their part.
- Food came first. Starting with the buffet gave everyone time to settle in, eat, and socialize before focusing on the mystery.
- The speakeasy added immersion. The Cat’s Meow created a memorable destination within the party and brought an extra sense of secrecy to the evening.
- The mystery gave the night structure. Rather than planning entertainment from scratch, the Night of Mystery game provided an activity that encouraged guests to mingle, interact, and stay involved.
The biggest takeaway? A murder mystery works especially well when the party environment gives guests opportunities to naturally interact with one another.
Who This Mystery Is Perfect For
Murder at Gatsby’s Gala is a great fit for groups that enjoy:
- Gatsby, Roaring ’20s, or speakeasy-inspired themes
- Dressing up for an occasion
- Glamorous parties with an elegant atmosphere
- Cocktail-style gatherings and dinner parties
- Mingling and interactive entertainment
- Creating immersive party spaces
- A little drama, mystery, and friendly suspicion
It can also work particularly well for hosts who love decorating. The theme provides plenty of inspiration, but you can decide how elaborate you want the party to be.
A few gold and black touches can establish the look, while hosts who want to go bigger can create bars, lounges, dance areas, dessert displays, and secret speakeasy spaces.
Hosting Tips We’d Share
One thing we learned from this party is that you don’t need every activity to happen in the same place.
Creating different areas gave guests a reason to circulate throughout the evening and helped the party feel more immersive.
Starting with dinner also worked well. Everyone could relax, eat, and get comfortable before drinks, desserts, mingling, and the mystery became the focus.
And most importantly, give your guests permission to have fun with their roles. Costumes and décor create the setting, but the guests bring the party to life.
“Create the atmosphere, give guests room to mingle, and let them bring their own flair to the mystery.”
That combination helped make our Gatsby party feel less like a traditional game night and more like an event.

Final Verdict: Would We Do It Again?
Absolutely.
This was definitely “a party for the books.”
What made the evening so memorable wasn’t one single decoration or activity. It was how everything came together: the elegant setting, food and drinks, different party spaces, guests arriving ready to participate, and a murder mystery that gave everyone a reason to interact.
Each guest brought their own flair, which made the experience feel unique to our group.
Night of Mystery gave us the framework for the evening, while we were able to get creative with everything surrounding it. That balance made it possible to host an immersive event without having to invent the entertainment ourselves.
Thank you for creating such a fun opportunity!
