Deadwood comes to the English Suburbs

Postby CalicoMax » Tue Mar 03, 2015 4:32 am

Last month a parcel of outlaws, varmits, city slickers, belles and floozies turned up at a strangely semi-detached and surburban saloon to help me celebrate my half century.

Copious use had been made of the supplied Deadwood and Vintage bottle labels. (And a couple of chaps had helped out emptying beer bottles to add to the décor.) We also – useful tip – found an image of ‘bullet damaged wood’ online and used multiple prints, of this, plus a little gambling-green baize, to cover our not very saloon like glass-topped table.

Jessie Wales, Black Barbara and Saloon Sally were all pleased to find their own faces super-imposed on the posters around the place.

One guest, Banker Bob, sent late apologies and so was unable to “attend” until after the murder. However, our pre-murder “Fat Cat” banker – genuinely a cute metal Fat Cat bin decked out in hat and gun – wore a helpful sign explaining that the Marshall knew all the Banker’s secrets and, in exchange for a donation to the ‘widders’ and orphans’’ fund – would share them.

The whole game was a thorough success – the only thing at fault was our own detection skills. Too much yapping, drinking, fan-flirting and play-acting – and not enough clue reading!
Be aware – the clues are genuine, sensible, deductible clues.
Well, stone cold sober the next morning they are. Sigh.

On the night itself we had only two contenders for the ‘Smoking Gun’ detection award. A tie-breaker question (nearest guess to the year of Custer’s Last Stand) gave the:
Smoking gun award to: Sheriff Sam (maybe not so lazy after all, huh?)

When you see the photos I’m sure you’ll agree competition for the ‘Dressed to Kill’ award was fierce (AND that the lovely Harriet High-Stakes wuz robbed!!! My teeth still gnash!). However, by a moustache:
Dressed to kill award to: Clay Coldwell (So proud of that coat he wore it all night!)

Drama Queen: Poker Alice (who had perfected an ice-cold stare of menace)

Money-Bags Award: Holly Hickok (We was all robbed. Literally!! Since we ladies mostly wore our money Western style tucked into our fine – ahem – bosoms, Holly had an advantage over any light-fingered male guests as she demonstrated her quick draw skills.)

[Special mention:
Firstly to the Marshall, who in the course of bribing for justice managed to be left with a paltry four dollars. Awwwww.
Secondly to Gambling Jack, who combined poker shenanigans with taking photographs to record the events of the Deadwood Poker tournament.]

Thank you Night of Mystery for contributing to a smashing birthday party.
